I really did. I have just discovered the official video to I Would Do Anything for Love, which looks like it is the most expensive Phantom of the Opera fanvid ever made*. It features a falling chandelier, oodles of candles, and a miserable, deformed, and hooded bloke who skulks around in the shadows waiting for a woman who appears inexplicably interested in him.**

I would have unironically adored it in 1993, had I known that it existed.

*With make-up rather like Buffy's vampires.

**Christine Daaé at least had the excuse of free singing lessons offering a rather better career, not to mention the mind games.

I secretly did adore it at the time, and can recall submitting questions to student union hustings asking the candidates who they would like to hose them down with holy water if they got too hot and what they wouldn't do for love. Sadly, I don't think either got asked.

Oh, I'm so sorry you missed that! It also ripped off Coppola's Dracula, to the extent of hiring the women who played the brides in that film.

I had the immense pleasure of being in the front row of a Meatloaf gig in 1989. He played the youth centre in Carlow like it was a stadium. You could also tell who'd been at the sharp end of Miss Coady's "rock is bad because sex in lyrics" lesson* by the cheers when he launched into Paradise By The Dashboard Light.

*I am led to believe we were the last class she taught that lesson to. Not only did we point out that the song actually has a very strong moral, but I popped down to the staffroom and asked if I could borrow her tape. She pulled a shocked expression and demanded to know what my mother would think. I gave her my cheeriest grin and said "I'm borrowing it for my mum, she's a huge Meatloaf fan and my sister's nicked her tape!"

It was compulsory, non-academic RE from a woman who had told a class cancer was caused by evil. One of the people in class that day was a girl called Jean, who was having one of her rare days of being well enough to be in school. Also, there was Therese (I think). Less than half a year later, Therese was motherless and Jean's parents were childless.

And that fiend knew that both Jean and Therese's mum had terminal cancer.

In terms of similar aesthetic - only with a female protagonist, a boarding school, and random fencers - have you seen the music video for "Total Eclipse of the Heart"? And the literal version, which is hilarious?

I thought you would have, but decided that the risk of your missing out was completely unacceptable... :)

I once sent that around my immediate coworkers one Friday afternoon. I could tell what points of the song they'd reached by the snorts.

Given that I rarely get rid of anything, it is entirely possible that I still have the single on cassette tape, having fallen in love with the video, or rather what bits of it were considered suitable for Going Live. If the vampiresses made the cut I would not have picked up the Dracula reference at that point, I would have decided the whole thing was a live action remake of the 1991 Disney Beauty and the Beast, which I had seen with not-my-boyfriend.

The video is pure Beauty and the Beast, but a really healthy one. The Beast only becomes handsome and escapes when he promises the bisexual Beauty that he will never fuck around with her emotions. She redeems him, not by pledging love to him, but because she accepts the pledge he makes.

I literally only noticed this tonight. It's awesome!
