Sometimes you have what seems like a fun idea for a fic, and then you write the full fic and you realise that it was a fun idea, but it's ability to sustain an actual fic is somewhat limited. Trope subversion is not inherently an interesting subject. So I gave up on the long version and wrote the short one instead.

In which Yuri P is drugged with sex-pollen at a competition and has only one thing on his mind...

More Yuri!!! on Ice fic.

Round and Golden by Nineveh_uk
Chapters: 1
Fandom: Yuri!!! on Ice
Rating: M, CNTW
Relationships: Chris/Victor
Characters: Yakov Feltsman, Victor Nikiforov, Christophe Giacometti

Summary: Victor has won gold at the Turin Olympics, and Yakov should be enjoying a well-earned rest. At least, he would be if Victor and Chris hadn't decided to put Victor's gold medal to some creative use...

A substantial portion of the blame for this fic lies with [personal profile] naraht for egging me on. Also, a bunch of students years ago who decided that what their art show catalogue cover really needed was creative use of ring doughnuts and caused me a busy morning at work.

Finally! Something crossed off the WIP list.

In the Studio
Chapters: 4/4
Fandom: Yuri on Ice
Rating: T, CNTW
Summary: The crowd in the stadium only had to scream their enthusiasm, the poor commentators in the TV studio had to try and make sense of what they were seeing... Finally it's the Grand Prix Final Free Skate!

*

Next up, either the Turin incident or, and I never believed I would write these words and yet here I am, the sex pollen fic.

I am taking the keywords in this to be 'in progress'. An idea in my head or notes jotted down, or even several pages of scenes, does not count for the purpose; this is basically the top of the pile that are most likely to be finished/actively worked on any time soon.

Corsica This is the untitled Wimsey/Harry Potter crossover fic about to have the mpreg ruthlessly cut, currently standing at c.85,000 words. It is not in fact going to be finished any time soon because there is still a lot to go, but I really, really want to finish this, and I really, really ought to make a push to finish this. I know where it's going, who the murderer is (because it is Wimsey/HP crossover crack-turned-casefic), I even know the final scene. I just have to write it all... I have no idea how much longer it will be, but I think it is unlikely to come in at less than another 20,000 words of plot, plus going back and taking out the mpreg and dealing with the narrative ramifications of that.

The Whispering Grass Non-crack, non-crossover, a take on a familiar fic scenario for Tanz der Vampire, i.e. how the Count came to accidentally murder his wife in a scenario that is basically Fields of Gold: the sick version. So classic angst-fic, really. I've got notes for pretty much the whole thing, I just have to write it up... This might be a recurring theme.

In the Studio. Yuri on Ice as observed by figure skating commentators. Three chapters posted, just one to go. I'm going to attempt to finish it this weekend; it shouldn't take long, just needs discipline and to re-watch episodes 11 and 12.

Round and Golden. Yakov-centric account of the unfortunate incident in Turin when Victor and Chris were teenagers. Another one for which I rapidly jotted down notes of the whole thing, but haven't moved on to doing the complete version. But it shouldn't take too long to finish.

Rostelecom hotel room. Untitled fic as to how Victor manoeuvres Yuuri into sharing a hotel room in Moscow and what happens when they get there. Half-written, know what's happening in the second half, just haven't bloody written it.

The Immovable Object In which Miles Vorkosigan meets the only power that might be able to stop him: the Vorkosiverse equivalent of the UKBA. The fact that the Vorkosiverse equivalent of the UKBA are the good guys in this story might give you indication as to how I feel about the narrative attitude some facets of Miles' character in the later books. And now all together - lots of notes, know where it's going, need to write up the remaining 80%...
And now time to get on with the day so I can do some of it!

I have committed further Yuri on Ice fic. Sorry, normal service will be resumed, I promised, and in the meantime there will be no soulmates AU.*

(1) A second chapter for In the Studio, with TV commentators Megan and John (and a techs chorus) at the Grand Prix Final.

(2) Yakov POV with teenage Victor A Coach's Lot. In which Yakov considers that part of his duties as a coach includes giving the professional equivalent of The Talk to young skaters heading off to international competition, in the hope that they won't do anything too stupid.**

I head north tomorrow for Christmas. Naturally I have not finished packing. When planning my break I did it with the intention of maximising the time spent with my family, and I'm really looking forward to that. At the same time, I think I probably ought to have given myself an extra day to sort myself out first, especially as I come back on the 2nd and am in the office on the 3rd. Still, I have nearly 6 hours on the train to relax...

* Famous last words.

** I want more Yakov fic. He's obviously very fond of Victor, does well by his skaters, and post-episode 10 his reasons for his immense cheesed-off-ness with Victor earlier in the series have become clear... Actually, I think what I want is comedy Yakov divorce fic, as witnessed by teenage Victor.

A far too belated rec for a birthday fic from [personal profile] naraht: Marginal Gains. It’s the Yuri on Ice doping fic the fandom needed: fun, well-characterised, and tackling a subject inexplicably absent from the fandom. I see that it has now turned from one chapter to 1/3, and await the next with much excitement. It was particularly well-timed in view of Friday’s McLaren Report II on state-sponsoring doping in Russian sport. As a cross-country ski fan I await with interest the revelations of any names…

I am still failing to find time for fic, but hopefully might manage more of it from the end of the week when I have a fortnight off work.

In other news, I shall be going to a work ‘winter school’ in Barcelona in March for a week. Most exciting! I have never been to mainland Spain and can’t speak a word of Spanish beyond ‘gracias’, which I probably pronounce incorrectly. It is a joint European universities initiative thing, and the theme of this one turns out to be ‘internationalism’, which might explain why I got in since my application leaned heavily on the subject of ‘you should give me a place because post-Brexit, British universities need all the European connections they can get.’ On the downside, I believe it involves networking.

I have written my most evil fic ever. More evil than Harriet and Peter furry roleplay. More evil than Peter with Alzeimher’s disease. I have written ... pet death.

I posted a fic last night. I'm not sure what time, maybe about 10:30 - 11pm. I was tired and ought to have gone to bed, but often when I have a cold I feel my best late evening, so I didn't. The fic is this one: In the Studio. It's about 500 words, outsider POV of a canon moment, namely the episode broadcast earlier yesterday, and inspired by a combination of an unlucky Eurosport commentator and Test Match Special.

Since then, I have been sitting back and watching the stats add up and for someone who is used to small book fandoms, the contrast is bizarre. At this point it has the most hits of everything I've ever posted on AO3, and it has achieved that in less than 24 hours. It has three times as many kudos as the next fic - which is also a short fic in the same fandom - and five times as many kudos as the third-ranked fic, which is the post-Gaudy Night Peter/Harriet one.

This is definitely not my best ever fic. There's nothing wrong with it, it's short and fun, it found a happy audience. But if you're in need of a quick ego-boost, get thee to an active slash-heavy fandom with new canon and tag with the main pairing!

Normal service will be resumed shortly when I decide to write a quiet character study for a minor character from something like Beware of Pity.

Deeply silly fic. I can only blame whatever germs are in the air at the moment or the week that I've had for giving me the urge to unwind on Friday night by writing figure-skating anime fic.

It is on AO3: Living the Dream.

Or to be precise,Yuri!!! on Ice. I don’t know why the exclamation marks are there, but they are. I’m not an anime watcher, it’s a genre that hasn’t really crossed my path since the days of French-Japanese co-productions shown dubbed on children’s television.* But I saw this mentioned as an anime about figure skating, and since though I am no skating devotee I class it under “winter sports I like” and as no-one going to make a series about cross-country skiing, I thought I’d give it a go. It didn’t hurt that the link I clicked made the skating look gorgeous.

Yuri on Ice follows Katsuki Yuuri**, a Japanese figure skater who is very talented, but lacks confidence and who has reached the nadir of his career after bombing in a major competition last season. He is miserable, out of form, and doesn’t know where to go next, but his luck changes when a bunch of infant skater fangirls post a video of him skating to a routine on the internet and it goes viral.

Because the routine is the impossibly hard and artistic one of Viktor Nikiforov***, all round Russian skate god who at 27 is ancient in skater years and wondering what to do next as it gets harder and harder to surprise the audience. Answer? Get on a plane to Japan and coach Yuuri, to the great confusion of the skating world, and the fury of Russian junior champion, now fresh-faced senior,15 year old other Yuri, who was counting on Viktor training – or at least providing choreography for - him.

So yes, there is a lot of skating, and it looks absolutely wonderful, as it should since they got professional consultants to help with it, and it is also funny and charming with endearing characters. But of course that’s not the only reason that there are suddenly a lot of fics for a 4 week-old fandom and the current women's skating champion's twitter is full of pictures.

That reason is the fact that Yuri on Ice is like an old-fashioned UST slash fic come to life, pining and all. Because Yuuri is not just a casual fan of Victor, he appears to be in love with him. Hell, in the last episode he pretty much declared that he was. He's been a fan for 11 years. His bedroom is covered with Victor posters. He got into skating seriously out of a hope to meet and compete against him. He skated his new routine in an attempt to get his love of skating back. He even named his (deceased) dog after him. And then the skate god he fancies like mad turns up in his family’s hot spring resort naked but for a strategically placed fountain and announces he is his new coach, at which Yuuri turns into a gibbering wreck and the entire show to massive fanservice, with the subtext, as Rupert Giles once put it, rapidly becoming text.

It is funny, endearing, with engaging characters and good-looking animation (at least to me, who hasn't seen it all before) and just the ticket for weary autumn evenings. For all I know it is massively full of cliches, but they are new cliches to me. The fic is, predictably, appalling. "Silverette" and "ravenette" is the least of it.

YouTube is failing me badly on clips of the skating routines, which only goes to show that fandom has its priorities wrong, but have an official trailer and opening credits.

*All together now, 'Children of the sun, see your time has just begun'...

**There are two Yuris, both transliterated from different alphabets. Japanese!Yuri tends to end up getting spelt Yuuri.

**Or as he is known in real life, Evgeni Plushenko. Although Plushenko, enormously charismatic skater though he is, does not as far as I am aware cause room-fulls of journalists to faint when he smiles.
