Yesterday, which started with freshers' flu and the discovery that if one must be sick, then doing it with the light off is somehow less horrible, ended on a similarly bum note with the discovery that I've been overpaying my council tax since February, because the single occupier discount wasn't being applied - the letting agent had informed the council of the tenancy, and somehow I had assumed that the discount had been included. It hadn't. Fortunately the man on the other end of the phone this morning said they'd send me a new statement and recalculate the year, so I don't think I'm going to end up overpaying, which is probably more than I deserve. Moral: double check these things!

Gah! I hope they get the recalculation sorted (on the plus side, presumably your next bill will be substantially lower?)

That would be rather good!

Don't they give it back to you if you overpay? That's shocking. How on earth did you find out?

They might not recalculate it for ages, or not until the end of the year. You probably need to jump up and down and claim it. But then I still haven't done this about our gas bills which have been saying we are £200 in credit for the past 2 years. I think they think we will use more gas in the winter and it will cancel it out but we have proved that this is not in fact the case.

My council tax stopped being collected as someone else had registered my address as their home and started to pay it instead... generous of them, but confusing.

That's very odd! What happened when they realised?

They wanted to tell me off and charge me for the full missing amount at once, they said; but admitted it was their fault in the same letter, and offered me a revised schedule. I got a vast number of 'Welcome to your new home!' leaflets though...
