Need an autumn icon

A productive day, except on the fanfic front (but I did 500 words yesterday, and thought my way through quite a bit of the next scene as I walked to the shops this afternoon because it was sunny, so that will have to count). Looked at in the abstract, it is perhaps not that productive. but:

- I defrosted the freezer (I will never accidentally leave the door open again).

- I went for a run.

Both things I find dull but did anyway, so I am counting that as success. I was rewarded on the run by a herd of roe deer, one only about 10 yards away, emerging from behind a hedge and promptly disappearing again on discovering me, the rest of them in the usual habit of deer, hot-footing it across the field in the opposite direction. Large wildlife make every day better!

I have decided that since flavoured vodkas invariably disappoint, I am going to have a go at making hedgerow berry jellies instead. This also allows me a couple of weeks grace until they are ripe.

Vodka-flavoured hedgerow jelly berries?

Going for a run isn't dull! Especially when it has surprise!deer!

PS hedgerow berry jellies is a total tongue twister.

Hedgerow berries also go well with venison ...

Seeing the deer on a run sounds great! I saw some yesterday, but they were the fallow deer which live in an enclosure in Alexandra Park, so less exciting than yours.

I hadn't thought of vodka-flavoured, but it could be worth a try. I do have a still-in-plastic ice-cube tray shaped like mini Absolut bottles.

Going for a run is staggeringly dull (possibly because unlike walking I am not yet good enough to talk to myself while doing), but the surprise!deer were a great reward for virtue.

Not at all bad - I am planning on having a go at hawthorn jelly, which the internet tells me goes well with game.

That does sound nice. There's a Hugh Fearley-Wossname one for sloe and crabapple sorbet, which I also thought I'd try - both handily picked on the same walk.

Deer in a park are still exciting, even if deer in the wild are extra exciting.

We have deer walking through the back yard so I don't have to go running. And whatever berries there may be, they've already eaten them. But I don't mind plain vodka :)

That means I have no excuse for not working on the fanfic though.

So all you have to do now is take your .223 with you next time you go for a run. Simples!

I had assumed the jellies would be vodka-flavoured as I am not a big fan of jellies and vodka would only improve them. But it might turn out to be a waste of vodka.

I am a big fan of jellies in jars to go with savory food type, of the redcurrant variety, as opposed to jelly-and-ice-cream jelly, which is an abomination. But if I have a enough juice it could be entertaining to see if I can make sweets out of them as well with a small amount of vodka. Not wanting to waste vodka is why I'm not going down the sloe vodka route again after an unsatisfactory experience, though I did find a Danish website about all sorts of flavoured vodkas: http://www.danish-schnapps-recipes.com/hawthorn.html
