Chewed tree trunks indeed. A random furry mammal in the river may be a coypu, but a tree on its side means a beaver. I have never seen one (well I might have in a zoo), nor a dam. I suppose that while their creations are very functional, they are perhaps not designed primarily with aesthetics in mind.
