Thinking about it, Austen fathers are pretty dreadful. Among minor characters, I suppose that Mr Musgrove is quite decent, but he's not actually called upon to do anything difficult. I haven't read Northanger Abbey for ages, but I think Mr Morland is a decent father (except for having dozens of children he won't be able to provide for), but Admiral Tilney certainly isn't.
I saw that TV adaptation, but for some reason remember little of the detail. I think because it had stuff I really liked and stuff I really didn't, and there appeared to be a giant stick uup Jonny Lee Miller's bum.
