I haven't read that, but I can see that in the right hands a story like that can work. Perhaps one of the questions is whether you are ultimately using the canon to say something about the historical situation (and Star Trek canon is an issue-exploring canon), or using the historical situation to do cool stuff with your canon (i.e. Sherlock and John shagging in a new place).
