Peter in the first half of HHC reaches almost super-human levels of getting it wrong - it's not just the incessant proposals, but that he adds to Harriet's confusion by ignoring the times when the polite suitor _should_ say something. I'm with you on Ekaterin - I wish she'd said "Look, Miles, I like you a lot. I'm certainly not intending to marry anyone else at the moment. But I intend to complete my education. If you're still around at the end, I'll probably be interested, but for now, back off or I'll drop you for good." Although maybe she did insist on an enormous financial settlement and custody of any children in case it didn't work out...
