What boots it to repeat?

A year on from this post, and I still don’t have any brown boots.

So it is time to seize the day by the scruff of its neck, and buy some boots.

So do I buy the boots I liked last year and still like with the buttons*, or the boots in really lovely burnished tan with buckles?

*Available locally for £150, not £185, or there would be no contest!

Yes, I'm trying to work out if I didn't buy them because I was being too stingy and couldn't 'justify' them when I ought to have done, or whether thinking they were too expensive was a way of allowing myself not to buy them. If you see what I mean. (At this point my mother starts banging her head against the wall in despair.)

I know exactly what you mean. I find that if I don't buy something within a reasonable window of opportunity, I secretly don't want it that much - either I think it's too expensive, or it's not quite right and for that much money I want something that I'll fall in love with, or I actually want to fill that niche in my wardrobe with something slightly different.

My problem is that whilst I normally find this a very reliable indicator, there is also a smaller but significant subgroup of stuff I haven't done and later really regret. In this case, I honestly don't know/can't remember.

Have you tried them both on? Which ones made you feel amazing? Or, alternatively, which ones would Harriet Vane wear?

Ah, the ever reliable Harriet Vane test. I usually use it for buying hats... So glad it isn't only me.

I have tried both on - but not, and I think this may be crucial, both in the same shop at the same time. If one pair didn't fit, or I hadn't seen it, I'd have happily bought the other, but (un)fortunately, both do fit and look great!

I am not sure if either is quite sensible enough a pair of brogues for Harriet Vane.

In that case, I think you should definitely go for the buttons. There will always be other pairs of boots with buckles, but those buttons must be bought and appreciated now!
