I've been there. You've been there. Maybe not in every case, but we know what it's like. You tell your Dad that you've nearly finished tidying your room. You tell your Mum that you cleaned your teeth. You tell your teacher that you did your homework, you just forgot it. You tell your University lecturer that your draft essay is nearly ready. You tell your boss that you've really got a grip on this project and all you need to do now is write it up.

And then you manage it or you don't. But you don't bloody do it with the future of the country. And you don't keep it up when you've been caught, at least when you're over five.

I'm fairly sure that at least 75% of the reason the country is in the mess it is in is the Oxford essay crisis mentality and the fact that the last three Prime Ministers have gone in with the assumption that as long as they're prepared to pull an all-nighter and blag their way through the tutorial it'll all be fine.

I suspect you are right. And the other 25% is the entitlement Eton installed in them that makes them think that will work in the rest of the world.

Wait, I'm wrong. That's 23%. I must leave 2% for Nigel Farage and Dulwich College, with the noble exception of the teacher who said he shouldn't be made a prefect on account of his far-right views.

We should probably also allow a bit for Murdoch and his vile rags feeding people so many lies they end up thinking the upper-class tossers deserve to be in charge and creating a world where spin is more important than facts.

This government just doesn't get enough credit for being just like us, the common people. I mean, haven't we all told the occasional white lie like "I'm not planning to prorogue parliament", or popped out for a bag of chips and accidentally sold some arms to Saudi Arabia?

Absolutely! It is totally comparable to popping a work pen in your bag for a meeting and somehow it ending up on the table with the phone at home. Happens to all of us.
