Grump. Weather

Given that I moan about never meeting new people (i.e. men), you'd have thought that nothing would have kept me away from the party I am supposed to be at this evening. Nothing but the fact that it is raining heavily, windy and cold, and my destination is an hour away, involving two buses and a walk in the middle, and I would spend as much time getting there and back as I would at my destination. Oh, and it's too far for a taxi.

This is ridiculous. I have a fortnight off work at Christmas, and will spend much of that at my parents' house. I think I may spend some of that time doing what I have oft talked of, and try to buy a car.

The weather is unspeakable. I'm rather glad I haven't had any occasion to leave the house today.

Is this a Freudian slip? The Desire that dare not speak its name, sneaking out unguarded?

[identity profile] azdak.livejournal.com 2008-11-01 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Except, of course, that you dare to speak it. In that perhaps "car"="man"?

[identity profile] nineveh-uk.livejournal.com 2008-11-01 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It is vile. I popped out this morning when it was dry, and it was bad enough. So I don't think that not going to Cowley is unreasonable.

Perhaps it is a hidden yet burning desire for Sean, successor to Frank as mechanic to the family jalopy. As it is hidden, of course, I can't say it isn't.

[identity profile] azdak.livejournal.com 2008-11-01 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I would find it easier to assess if you could provide a picture of Sean. If he looks like the back end of a bus, I would have my doubts.

However, since your stated reason for wanting a car is so you can drive across town to meet men, I don't think the desire is terribly well hidden...

I think my (former) lack of a car has been a major obstacle in meeting people. I just hate going out in the cold and the rain on public transport, and having to worry about the last bus home, or paying a fortune in taxi-fares.

I just can't wait to get my license so that I can actually use my little fiesta for more than practicing!

Most of the men I have met recently were gay or married. I cannot say that this is an improvement on not meeting any at all (well, that's not entirely true, but I expect you know what I mean).

I can heartily recommend Taruithorn banquets - that's where I met a ... well, woman, actually, but you know what I mean! ;-)

I'm sorry, I'll try and do better next time ... ;-)

You clearly should have gone in spite of the awful weather conditions because you could have caught pneumonia, which would have forced you to stay at the house of your host, hopefully a single, young and wealthy bachelor, who'd have been touchingly concerned for your welfare while his bitchy sisters were secretly plotting to throw you out.

Or you could just have enjoyed a comfy night at your own flat.

[identity profile] nineveh-uk.livejournal.com 2008-11-02 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That's clearly a failure of planning on my part!

[identity profile] nineveh-uk.livejournal.com 2008-11-02 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The banquet side of the equation doesn't sound bad, either!

[identity profile] nineveh-uk.livejournal.com 2008-11-02 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It does lack a bit of potential.

[identity profile] nineveh-uk.livejournal.com 2008-11-02 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Occasionally I think that I wouldn't use a car enough to justify having it - but I'm sure it wouldn't take me long to find uses. I've held a licence since I was 18, so it's just a question of getting over the terror of adulthood that is buying a car (quite possibly a fiesta!).

I have only seen Sean once or twice. Unprepossing Irish bloke, IIRC. I think I want to drive across town to meet other men.

It's possible that I spend too much time hanging around with Anglo-Catholics, of course.

[identity profile] carmine-rose.livejournal.com 2008-11-02 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I'd learnt when I was 18. It's a right pain not being able to drive, but I've never had chance before, being a perpetually poor student. I've been practicing lots, but I still feel like I'm shit!

[identity profile] nineveh-uk.livejournal.com 2008-11-03 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I did learn then - it took up a lot of birthdays and Christmas presents, but it was worth having done. I've generally lived in places where I don't need a car sufficient to justify keeping it in the drive, but I'm getting to the point now at which I reasonably often find myself inhibited by not having one and increasingly annoyed as a result.

Good luck with your learning.

I hear that Holy Trinity Brompton is quite good on the romance front...
