That is a very good point about losing a bass. It adds to the difference of Quartet with a female arbiter too.

Can a romantic manpain song ever be sung by a bass? As Ian Wallace memorably* said:

"We basses and baritones never get the girl. We always have to play a drunken monk or someone's uncle. The nearest we ever get to kissing the soprano is giving her a chaste peck in Act 3 for something the tenor did to her in Act 1."

*quoted in his obituary, but I did nearly remember all of it.
