I'm sure there was a fair amount of non-hierarchical widdling in the trenches, giving plenty of opportunity for a noticing man to notice things ("will the neighbours say/'He was a man who used to notice such things'?"), but that was more than twenty years ago and Peter may have doubted that his memory was still accurate.
