A friend linked me to this story of literary feelings running high: Russian Man Stabbed to Death in Poetry-Over-Prose Dispute.

Russia appears to have form on this - last September a man was shot in a dispute about Kant.

The Finn and his Bosnian friend used to have long shouty arguments all night, with drink, about anything under the sun. Perhaps I should be relieved that nobody was Russian.

"The only real literature is prose" are real fighting words in the land of Pushkin. I'm absolutely serious; poetry is a huge, huge part of the literary market there and I've met a ridiculous number of Russians who can quote poetry to an extent that makes Peter Wimsey look like a slacker. That being said, I am not at all surprised that alcohol was involved.

On a random poetry-related note, did you know that Robert Browning went to St. Petersburg in the early 1830s as an attache? I like to imagine that at some state function or other, he and Pushkin might have exchanged polite greetings while reaching for the caviar :).

Charles Dodgson went to Russia, too, rather later.

Alcohol seldom helps these situations...

I iddn't know that Browning went to Russia - I must confess that I got the worst mark of my degree on the Victorians paper ;-)
