Now I've got a little more time I've come back to revisit. I particularly like the way Harriet's ignorance of the ways of Fourth Forms save her from making misleading assumptions, and also the thread of steel in her that makes her align with Peter before she ever meets him - If Miss Dakers had cheated, good-heartedness should not save her. Nor could one evade unpleasantness through inaction. There, in a nutshell, is the difference between Miss Pym and Miss Vane. And I love the way Harriet's musings on the way things might have gone in Miss Pym Disposes a detective novel lead her inexorably towards Gaudy Night, with attendant metacommentary.
