Why is it that the socks that appeared black when I put them in the cupboard, got them out of the cupboard, and put them on, all done under decent lighting, nonetheless have revealed themselves as I re-tie my shoelace to be very definitely navy blue. Damn you, socks!

Unlike my children, at least you are not under threat of detention when this happens.

Wrong Coloured Socks seems to be the only thing they get the boys on. I don't know why there aren't rules on the acceptable height of quiffs and rigidity thereof in an educational context, but there aren't.

The last time I bought navy blue tights was in Year 10, which was 22 years ago. Up until five years ago, black tights were still turning out to be navy by the time I was halfway to work, and I think the only reason it's stopped happening is because I binned all my sensible tights when I gave up work, and have barely taken my jeans off since.

Navy is my current favourite colour of tights. But a couple of years ago I got fed up with never being able to find the colour of tights I was looking for because they had got tangled up and shoved to the back, so I started organising my tights by colour in the drawer as I put them away, and now I always know which colour I'm reaching for. /smug

I suggested on Twitter once a Kickstarter for a small torch, perfectly calibrated to tell the difference between black and navy tights on dark winter mornings. Someone should definitely do this.

That is an excellent ideal. You should go on Dragon's Den.

I gave up on my several pairs of black and navy trousers, and wrote the colour on the labels inside. It's the black and navy Crocs I still have problems with, I always have to take them into daylight.

I can just manage to tell my otherwise identical navy and black trousers apart, but barely. Come on, manufacturers, make the blue a bit brighter, it would help us all!

I too have been caught out by this - I swear they still looked black under my bedroom lamp but in the glaring lights of my office they were definitely navy.

If your black and navy trousers can't be told apart, does it matter which you wear?

(This is a philosophical question, not a questioning-your-clothing-choices one!)

Because while they can't be told apart when I'm getting dressed, alas, they can be told apart when I am at work, and they don't go interchangeably with all tops.

But navy ones look better with navy trousers in summer. Possibly that's my answer, that in winter I should put away the navy ones and just use black, and in summer I should put away the black ones and just use navy.

There's a reason I buy only black pants :D

Actually I do have a couple of navy pairs of pants--I figure few enough people actually notice my socks that I can wear black. I'm basically at the point with socks that I try to buy the same style each time as well, that way I don't have the same aggravation when I lose one of a pair. Mind you it took me decades to get here and I've found a style of cabled cotton knee highs that really work!

Yes, but you can't wear those to work!

When I need work (or preaching!) socks, I buy the kind with coloured toes and heels that don't show when you have shoes on but are easy to pair up and you can see them in your drawer full of crazy everyday (for those of us who don't work in an office) socks.

I find it's not so much trousers - my black trousers live on a different hangar to my everyday ones - as tops. I find it very hard to tell whether I've got a black or a navy top out of the cupboard.

I most certainly can, could, and did wear those to work! Unless you're working somewhere where your FEET are on display, or have to wear a uniform, nobody cares what socks you have on.

Those look awfully cozy. Are any hand knit?

ALL of them hand-knitted, by me, unless that's just an edge of a commercial (thermal) one poking up at top right. And there are more below those; I haven't counted accurately recently, but probably about 40 pairs? And they are indeed very cosy!

(I'm currently wearing the pair you can see at the front centre, which are knitted in Knit Picks Felici 'Time Traveler', and the pattern is Earl Grey. Thought you ought to know.)

There are definitely plenty of colourful sock wearers around my place, although I tend to be conservative in work socks. It is the mustard yellow corduroy suits where I draw the line.

I just get so bored of black by the end of winter/spring that I can't bear wearing it on the many days of summer in which the weather requires trousers. I wear black socks happily with my winter navy trousers, but in the summer they seem to bring a whiff of chill with them, hence the navy. Also, in winter I'll mostly be wearing black shoes at work, but in summer they may be a different colour.

I think the lesson is that socks are more complex than one might think!

I accidentally wore navy tights to work instead of black ones a few weeks ago. It was not a good look with the rest of the outfit.
