Continuing Education
May. 9th, 2006 02:42 pmThings I learned in the last few days:
1) When sewing, there are some mistakes that steaming cannot remedy, but for most of them, a well-wielded steam iron will do a lot.
2) I gave him the benefit of the doubt, and tried a second Ian Carmichael Peter Wimsey television adaptation, The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club, and I am now absolutely decided that he’s utterly wrong for the part. He has a solidity, even stolidity – physical, mental, intellectual – that is entirely contrary to my impression of the character.
3) The NHS is worth it. I already knew this, but the reminder was nice. Yes, I had to wait a couple of months to see the consultant, but when I did, the appointment was easily arranged, and at the scheduled ten past two, my name was called. Everyone I had anything to do with was unfailingly courteous and informative and professional. And it was free at the point of delivery – important as it would not have been covered by insurance.
4) On the other hand, Bedford is a dump.
5) The reason that the expected frogspawn has not appeared in my parents’ pond is probably that the pair of mallard ducks previously believed to be occasional visitors are in fact commuter ducks, roosting there at night and disappearing before my parents get up.
6) None of you lot could recognise the first lines of John Halifax, Gentleman, Randall Garrett’s Lord Darcy Stories, or The Art of Courtship and Marriage by Walter M. Gallichan. I admit I didn’t really expect the last to have any takers, but as a general guide, you should assume that any book which capitalizes the first letters of Life and Love in a single sentence, is an inter-war marriage manual, and thus light entertainment of the first order.
