Words and Music and a Dragon
Aug. 15th, 2007 08:11 amI was rather shocked to learn a couple of years ago, via the film Meet the Parents, that there are people out there who believe that the song "Puff, the Magic Dragon" is not a poignant lament for the ending of childhood and decline into the mundane world, but a reference to smoking cannabis. Clearly such people have been subjected only to ersatz songs about dragons and have never heard the glory of the real thing. So I bring it to you now, courtesy of Peter, Paul and Mary*, the version to which my father had to make up an extra verse to console Middle Sister, who does not have the poetic soul to appreciate that an unhappy ending makes it better, the spoken introduction and the song.
*Emphatically nothing like Rod, Jane, and Freddy.
[ETA: It seems that the Rod, Jane, and Freddy link also has sound. My apologies for any inadvertant distress the lack of warning may have occasioned. No-one should be faced with the sound of this trio unprepared.]
