Does anyone know – or know the book that would tell me – how hotels that played host to the travelling upper classes accommodated servants in the 1920s/30s? We see Bunter in Peter Wimsey’s suite fairly late at night in one of the short stories, and over breakfast in Clouds of Witness, but does he have a bedroom as part of the suite or does he sleep elsewhere? Where does he eat? What about Jeeves? I’m not talking about oil/railroad/shipping plutocrats with the sort of wealth that could hire entire floors at the Ritz, but wealthy individuals or couples travelling with a valet or lady’s maid.
