(Fandom) size matters

I posted a fic last night. I'm not sure what time, maybe about 10:30 - 11pm. I was tired and ought to have gone to bed, but often when I have a cold I feel my best late evening, so I didn't. The fic is this one: In the Studio. It's about 500 words, outsider POV of a canon moment, namely the episode broadcast earlier yesterday, and inspired by a combination of an unlucky Eurosport commentator and Test Match Special.

Since then, I have been sitting back and watching the stats add up and for someone who is used to small book fandoms, the contrast is bizarre. At this point it has the most hits of everything I've ever posted on AO3, and it has achieved that in less than 24 hours. It has three times as many kudos as the next fic - which is also a short fic in the same fandom - and five times as many kudos as the third-ranked fic, which is the post-Gaudy Night Peter/Harriet one.

This is definitely not my best ever fic. There's nothing wrong with it, it's short and fun, it found a happy audience. But if you're in need of a quick ego-boost, get thee to an active slash-heavy fandom with new canon and tag with the main pairing!

Normal service will be resumed shortly when I decide to write a quiet character study for a minor character from something like Beware of Pity.

Congratulations, says the genfic writer whose own highest-ranked work on AO3 is angsty fluff tagged with two of the biggest slash pairings in an anime megafandom. ^_^

And congratulations to you on also experiencing this rare pleasure :-) Well-tagged angsty fluff sounds like it should do nicely. I mean, I'm not about to go out and suddenly start writing Steve/Bucky coffeeshop AUs, but I can appreciate a bit better why people do.

It's mind-boggling. It now has more kudos than it has words. But by fandom standards it's not so remarkable, the top one is a soulmates AU with more than 5000 kudos! It's just another world, like that of people who think that they are obviously middle-class because their friends have five gold Ferraris, but they only have two.

You're right, minor characters can't cut it any more, small book fandoms don't deliver the goods. I'm going to make everything I write a crossover with Captain America. I've never seen Captain America, but my impression is that that's not necessarily a problem. Or perhaps Peter Wimsey in a high school AU...

Howling with laughter - I'm not commenting on there, although I've left kudos, but that was seriously one of the funniest things I've read for ages, especially as I have met most of the Eurosport commentators one way and another during my skating years!

Thanks for the kudos! I am glad that it rang true to the connoisseur :-) Poor commentators, being expected to stay professional under all circumstances...
