The Magic Ticket sounds amazing. What a brilliant idea for encouraging people to use public transport really regularly. I remember Austrian trains having a reasonable website as well, as opposed to NationalRail not actually having a booking function...
It's great that hopefully you'll be able to get over to see your mother (and let's face it, the chance of the UK government instituting a lockdown right now is zero), but I'm sorry you're having issues sorting out the local transport. "Sheer incompetence and greed" pretty much covers it, I'm afraid. Would just getting a 1-day travelcard on arrival be an option?
