Thank you for signing up to Yuletide! I look forward to reading whatever it is that you write, and I hope that you enjoy writing it.

Some general info. to start.

I enjoy gen, het, or slash, though I’d prefer something with a rating G – R, rather than the NC-17 thrusting of hungry todgers in textbook anatomical detail. I like characters with a reasonable connection to canon, to learn fascinating things I didn’t know, mystery, romance, death, angst (angst with a point to it), insouciant good humour, close character study, enormous big plot. Not necessarily all at once. I don’t like the equivalent of Ron-bashing when a character is made a psychotic axe-murderer in order to clear them out of the way, though if you have a great idea that needs them to be out of the way, a quiet divorce or a long trip abroad could always be an option!

1) I adore just about everything and anything about the Wimsey books. I’ve requested Peter and Parker because I really like the dynamic of the friendship in the early books, and there’s hardly any fic about them. Most of all I’d like something that shows part of their developing relationship (whatever it is), set before Charles’ marriage to Mary. I haven’t put Bunter in the character list, but it would be lovely to see him about, and the presence of Helen or Mary would not go unappreciated if you fancy it. I would be happy with either gen or slash. Otherwise – go for it. A mystery in Barrow-in-Furness? I cheer. A first visit Dukes’ Denver? I count myself delighted. An introduction to debauchery in the Piccadilly flat or a liner to New York? Why not?

2) I’ve always thought that the problem with The Slipper and the Rose is that Cinderella is so very drippy. Forget Richard Chamberlain’s challenges, even Casanova might have balked at displaying unrestrained passion for Gemma Craven’s Cinders. The Prince is going to have an awful lot more fun with John, and I’d like a fic about that! Please, no song-fic, which is not to say that “Why Can’t I Be Two People” is not a question that needs answering. Unlike some areas of fandom, however, I do not necessarily believe that “position and positioning are socially conditioning” IYKWIM (much as I’d love to see a modern stage production that did something entertaining with that song…). I’d prefer cheerfulness to heart-rending tragedy – unless you have a great idea for HRT, of course!

3) I’ve chosen Troy, because I like her best. She’s clever, interesting, talented, humorous, and I wish she were in every one of Marsh’s books, but she isn’t so I have turned to Yuletide for solace. The two relationships I am keen on are her friendship with Katti, and of course the romance with Alleyn. (Of course if you want to write Young Troy before she meets either, that’s fine, too.) I loved “Tied Up in Tinsel”, and might be partial to a Christmas-themed mystery, but really, I’ll leave it up to you.

Have a very merry Yuletide!

I honestly don't have a burning desire to see a stage version starring John Barrowman. Oh no, not at all ;-)

Speaking of quiet divorces and long trips abroad, I have been wolfing down the Phryne Fisher books by Kerry Greenwood, and am very impressed by the way Greenwood manages to quietly ensure that one lover is more or less out of the way before another falls into the lap of the Hon. Miss Fisher!

I love seeing all these posts on my flist - they're very informative. *squirrels away notes*

I keep meaning to have a go at those for a bit of fun, and am now additionally inspired the promise of discretion in romance! A trip to the library beckons. Or indeed the bookshop. Do you recommend any one in particular?

I am afraid that I am not a very good Yuletide participant, given that I tend to both offer and read what I already know, but I enjoy it nonetheless.

They are lots of fun and a bit frothy - perfect light reading. The author seems to be a big Sayers fan, although her heroine is very set on not letting her war trauma get in the way of a good time.

The first one is Cocaine Blues, and I recommend starting there, because they do follow a chronological order. The rest are here (http://www.phrynefisher.com/books.html).

Oh, gosh, yes, I've seen reports of people acquiring entire new fandoms purely for Yuletide, and the idea of that makes me shudder. I find it hard enough to write about books that I've actually read a couple of times!
