Troll!

Apparently my brain is feeling incapable of writing intelligent and nuanced posts about important subjects, so I shall stick to saying that I was very entertained by lightweight* Norwegian mockumentary The Troll Hunter at the weekend. There are about 15 minutes of lovely Norwegian road /ferry trip scenery too many, but it is funny (no doubt funnier if one is actually Norwegian and gets all the culturally-specific jokes), even the excess scenery is attractive, and the special effects are generally pretty decent. And how many films do you know that reference the Billy Goats Gruff? The troll hunter himself might look like a hairy Indiana Jones, but his motivation for the film is that of the disaffected bureaucrat fed up of filling in what the (not as good as they ought to be) subtitles call the “Slayed Troll” form and arguing with his superiors who don’t understand the realities on the ground of practical troll management, without even an antisocial hours allowance. It also provides an excellent explanation for the Norwegian tendency to stick electricity pylons slap bang through the middle of attractive scenery.

*There need to be more good lightweight films.

So it's not too scary? We have it here ready to watch, but I am such a coward, I've been putting it off.

On a very slightly related topic, did you see the news story about the Swedish guy who survived two months snowed into his car? Yikes!

It's only a 15, and it certainly doesn't push the upper boundaries of the rating. Absolutely fine for a coward!

I saw the car, but wondered how exactly it happened. Did he just lie down when he was stuck one night and then sleep for 2 months? Because otherwise he was only 1km from a road, so why did he not get out of the car and walk for help straight away? Or at least when no help arrived after a couple of hours.

The Independent says he was struggling to pay off significant debts, but it doesn't look like a suicide attempt, or if it is, it's a very odd one.

I had it mentally filed as "pity it's too scary for me to watch it" as well, having seen it billed as a horror film.

The Finn is hoping Nazis From The Moon Iron Sky (http://www.ironsky.net/site/) might make it to Taunton but I'm not sure it really counts as a Finnish film when it's not actually in Finnish.

It is not much scarier than the bear video, if you imagine a bear jumping out at you, and it is a lot less scary than The Empty Child Doctor Who episodes. I was delighted to find it was a 15, as I am annoyed at never seeing Dog Soldiers (squaddies vs. werewolves) because it sounds too scary.

Iron Sky sounds as if it could be so bad it's good, or so bad it's bad...

I don't think Dog Soldiers actually is scarier than the Empty Child, but it is considerably more disgusting, so I think it depends on whether you are squicked by blood and guts rather than the strength of your nerves.

I saw the car, but wondered how exactly it happened.

I'm glad I was not the only one who was curious about that. I wonder if it was really bad weather when he crashed, and he had no idea where he was, or had a bang on the head and was thoroughly disorientated for a few days, or even broke a limb? Or maybe he was like the person in the poem (possibly by AA Milne?) who when shipwrecked on a desert island went through all the things he should do (build a hut, catch goats to milk, look for fresh water) but because he can't decide what to do first "Just sat there and basked until he was saved". Sadly I can't find the title online...

We refer to that one as "being like the man on the island", it being a frequent family dilemma, but it's actually called The Old Sailor.

The Swedish press and the hospital aren't saying anything other than that he is being treated and doing well and that the causes of the incident are still unclear and being investigated.

That's the one! Brilliant. I always loved it, possibly because I recognise myself in it too much...

It is in no way deep, but it certainly made for an entertaining couple of hours - definitely worth picking up if it comes your way (though probably not in the dubbed English version).

I can't bear dubbed versions of anything - I'd much rather read subtitles and hear the actors' real voices then understand what a crap dubbing actor is saying.

Re-watched as an adult, the dubbing of Heidi is surprisingly brilliant. But otherwise, I'm definitely with you on a preference for subtitles. Though "What a friend we have in Jesus" sounds much better in Norwegian.

I suspect "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" sounds better in any language I don't understand.

That is a good point. Also, it was artistically necessary to the story.

I've just seen Troll Hunter and really enjoyed it. I wasn't expecting it to be quite so funny, but in fact I ended up quoting bits of it at colleagues (who had already seen it) for most of the following day. Yes, it's not going to go down on my list of the most meaningful films ever (um, not that I have one), but I do like a bit of deadpan humour.

I was also vaguely amused to discover that the Norwegian for 'troll piss' is, in fact, 'troll piss'.

I wish I had the type of colleagues who recognised quoted lines from Troll Hunter! Though they are quite good on BBC4 Danish thrillers.
