I have just ordered Vogue 8772, 50% off, free postage - which means it is still twice what it would cost in the current US sale, but you can't have everything. I think I might try it in something cheap before I cut into my Liberty silk crepe - after all, it's only my first go at a buttoned blouse, what could possibly go wrong?

Ooh, pretty!

I ordered <ahref="http://www.sewdirect.com/acatalog/m5759.html#a1862">McCalls 5759 some time ago, and am still trying to muster the courage to cut into the sheeting for a muslin, never mind the embroidered wool I actually want to make it in.

Very nice - I particularly Iike the collar. I can see why you might be wary of cutting into the fabric, though!

Unless every part of your body is the same size as their fitting model, it would probably be a good idea to make a toile anyway so you can make minor adjustments of things like sleeve length and shoulder breadth.

Life is too short for toiles! Fortunately Vogue's bog-standard model fits me very well, unless it is a very close-fitting (or very baggy) garment, so in this case I'll have a go in a cheapish fine linen/cotton that would serve as a summer office shirt to check the fit and instructions.

I have made buttoned shirts, though not for about 20 years, and what used to go wrong was buttonholes. First of all there's working out how the machine does them, then there's perfecting it on bits of scrap fabric and once you've got that sorted there's the bit where you have to get them all the same and the right distance apart and the right distance from the edge. But it will be fine, honest.

That's very reassuring, that is... The buttonholes are probably the major reason I've never made a blouse, though I have done them on jackets. I am slightly tempted to do them by hand...
