I can't be the only person who on reading the Guardian article headlined 'Sexual depravity' of penguins that Antarctic scientist dared not reveal thought of Arthur Conan Doyle's Giant Rat of Sumatra for which the world was not prepared...

When seeing that he'd written his notes in Greek so only the educated could understand, my first thought was actually of Fawlty Towers: "That's even worse! They invented it!"

It is far too long since I have watched "Fawlty Towers", I can't remember that one! Hmm, perhaps one to add to the DVD hire list.

It's in "Gourmet Night" when Basil discovers that the chef who's hitting on Manuel is Greek. I like Fawlty Towers but can't watch it too often because the pain level gets too high. (I feel the same way about the British Office).

I liked the comment in on the BBC website best - to the effect that the writer of the original report had fallen into the common error of thinking that penguins were lilttle people just because they walk upright and wear evening dress - when of course they're birds, and should be judged as such.

I like the comment, but suspect the Victorian writer in question was just as opposed to homosexual penguins as homosexual people (possibly more so, penguins don't have the excuse of its being just a phase when a chap's at public school).
