That annoying feeling when in January you learn about something that it would have been perfect to ask for for birthday-or-Christmas, had you but known it existed before birthday-and-Christmas. Though I was very happy with the presents I received, so I'm not actually complaining. I shall just have to buy Linocut and Reduction Printing by artist Laura Boswell myself.

It's a January Sunday, cold and grey, and my arm/shoulder is still aching after pulling something or other. So it's time for a quiet hour or so with the men's downhill skiing from Wengen, and some watercolour painting.

I have booked a ticket for ENO's Sweeney Todd in April, a rather expensive ticket for Sweeney Todd, on an evening that is manageable but not the best option ever, because that was just about all that was left when I was booking in the autumn. Also, my father isn’t coming because there were no affordable options for two people.

This morning I have an email from ENO announcing booking for an extra performance on Easter day that would have been far more convenient, and something fun to do at Easter. ENO don't do refunds. Aargh!

ETA: No refunds, but they do do exchanges, hurrah! New ticket, a couple of rows further forward. Success all round.

...turned out to be a cased of mistaken identity.

I was all set to rant about “actuation”, which I noticed on my bottle of sinus spray as I was brushing my teeth this morning (it contains 140 actuations, and each actuation is 0.1ml*). Fortunately I checked the OED first and discovered a quotation in the same sense from 1713 (plus others since). So I can still say that it is a ghastly word, but not that it is a ghastly modern word dreamt up by people trying to do anything but write something in plain English**. I still think it’s a pity that it used instead of something ordinary like squirt. Squirt feels silly, but only because we don’t generally use it in a technical sense and so its associations are very different. If we did employ it as technical language, it would rapidly cease to feel inappropriate when used as such.

*”Dose” can’t be used instead, because a single dose may be more than one “actuation”.

**Though it is a ghastly C18 word dreamt up by people trying to do anything but write something in plain English.

Came home to work on paper without constant interruptions. Delayed leaving office. Delayed getting home (OK, that was mostly by walking off phenomenal levels of irritation rather than getting the bus straight away). Discovered that I had left the data stick with the files on at work. Discovered that the remote working widget didn't work at first because it had to warm up having been in the freezing cold kitchen, and then because the pin code isn't the pin code I've got written down. So now I will have to go in early tomorrow. Roll on the end of next week. I am not down to take Friday off. I think I am going to take Friday off.

But for now I am going to sit down and watch Horrible Histories and match socks. At least it will be productive.
