I appear to be in agreement with a tweet by Nadine Dorries re. the contrasting coverage of Theresa May’s trousers vs. David Cameron’s far more expensive suits.

In other news, my employer now has a Head of Brexit Strategy, which is more than the government seems to.

Oh good grief, I agree with Nadine Dorries. Help.

(I can't work out why having a large salary apparently does not in and of itself put you out of touch with normal people, but spending it on the Wrong Things does).

Quite. An article on clothing in politics and socio-economic equality could be really interesting. Another "woman spends money on a thing we don't criticise men for, we will also criticise said woman if she doesn't spend money like this" is not.

Nah. All it means is that Nadine Dorries has finally seen the light and agrees with US. At least on something.

(And if you have a large salary due to your position, and are going to face massive scrutiny of your appearance every time you step outside your front door, in a way that previous holders of your position did not, it makes sense to spend some of that large salary on your appearance)

You're right! Looking at it that way round is fine. I feel reassured and that 2016 is not sliding further towards apocalypse.

I feel considerably more sympathetic to a woman in that sort of position spending a lot on clothes. It's not as if the Daily Mail would be fine with it if May were wearing something from Next.

I would be interested to know whether or not she actually bought the trousers in question. She is wearing them in a photo taken specifically for a magazine article, not snapped popping to the corner shop for milk and an almond magnum. It seems entirely possible that a stylist brought them over and then took them away again afterwards (I haven't seen the article: it may say "Trousers Mrs May's own", of course).

One of the people at my knitting group last night seemed fairly sure they weren't hers but just a pair she'd been styled into, which makes it even worse.

On a side note, I've realised that - though I'm not particularly interested in fashion, and I don't share her taste in shoes - TM's unabashed commitment to her own style is one of the more likeable things about her.

That's how I feel. It isn't really my style, but it's clear that she genuinely is interested in and enjoys clothes, and why not? It's kind of nice to see a female politician who is damn well going to wear her leopard print kitten heels not matter what.

I can entirely believe that she bought them, since she clearly likes clothes a lot, but I can equally believe that she didn't buy them because they're massively impractical, but leapt at the chance to wear them for a bit.
