Say that I want to listen to something on iPlayer. I can download it, and it will stay on my computer for a period of time before vanishing forever. But say that I want to keep it permanently. There is a radio-cassette player behind me, so I could use that, but I know that it can be done with the computer - but how?

I haven't tried it myself, but my father uses the program Total Recorder to do this; it'll apparently take input from streaming audio and save it as an MP3.

I record using a free programme called Audacity - the disadvantage is that I can't work out how to get it to record just the audio output, so you have to put the computer in a room and tiptoe quietly away.

You need software that will capture whatever is sent to your sound card - I use Audio Hijack (for Mac) and I gather Audacity works well on Windows (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=recording&i=streaming for setup info) and is free.

In the past, I used Beebotron (http://beebotron.org/index3lite.php?reload) to get the Windows Media Player links to the program (find program, right click, copy link location) then used NetTransport to download it. And then if you want it other than in .wma format, I used to use Wavepad to convert to mp3. But now I don't commute to an office with an ipod, I don't bother with the last bit.

But times have moved on and I expect there is a much easier way that I don't know about. Husband, like read2day, recommends Audacity but I can't get it to work on my desktop.

get_iplayer (or one of the various similar bits of software) can produce mp3 or aac files without the expiry time - it's a little temperamental to use, but it does work. There's a Windows front-end via here (http://www.infradead.org/get_iplayer/html/get_iplayer.html)

Afraid I can only echo what other people have said, there's no easy way round it any more. I also used to use Net Transport to download directly, but the BBC changed the streaming format, so as far as I know, the only way now is to record in real time (I use paid for software but Google will throw up any number of free solutions like Audacity). I'd also recommend Wavepad for converting file formats, if necessary, as well as editing.

You can still use Net Transport to download if you use the links to each program provided at www.beebotron.org. But what you'll be downloading now is a Windows Media Player file rather than real audio. I tried it yesterday and it still works.

get_iplayer works for me. On Windows it's a command line tool run from the DOS window, but it's only a matter of a couple of commands -- one to find the programme, one to download it.

this may not work on windows- on my mac, I download audiobooks from the library- they disappear, unless I drag the file, you have to find where they put it, and drag it to my itunes- or drag it to a blank cd and burn it. I need to do this as they disappear before I have finished listening, then I can delete them.
