I have a headache. This is particularly annoying because I never have headaches, so whenever I get one I always worry for the first couple of hours as to whether I’ve actually got something serious. Then I don’t end up writhing on the floor in agony, and I realize that it’s just a headache and I shall have to put up with it. More happily I also have Rupert of Hentzau by Anthony Hope for holiday reading. I’m not going on holiday for a week and a half, but I can’t wait. I am going to Switzerland – Geneva, with a couple of days somewhere that looks like a chocolate box. There is a chance that it might be sunny. My knees may yet see daylight this summer.
When I get back from holiday, I think that I shall investigate getting mobile broadband. I am fed up of not having it at home, but don’t really want to sign a long-term contract. Pay As You Go is really not particularly expensive (once you’ve paid for the modem…), and I don’t tend to download stuff. Then I could also use it when e.g. I visit my parents for a fortnight at Christmas and time on their computer/internet is limited. The headache isn’t helping the fanfic, either. I had such virtuous plans to sit down with the laptop last night. I haven’t written anything for ages, but am attempting to remedy this and have acquired a copy of Traitor’s Purse so that hopefully I can at least get the Amanda/Campion fic off my hands and then I shall never have to write anything more about them, ever. I am tempted to have a desperate Campion phone Peter Wimsey for emergency advice on sex (not having had time to read the book), but I fear that would simply be indulgence.
Meanwhile, I am absolutely not going to write the story* in which the reason Katy Carr’s Cousin Helen never married is that she is only pretending to be an invalid. In fact she spends all day on the sofa resting because she spends most nights as chief instructress in “Mistress Helena’s School of Pain”, which she and her nurse run in the basement. Alec’s wife is fully aware of this, which is why she is not perturbed by her husband’s continued mooning after his paralysed ex-fiancée.

Date: 2008-08-21 02:48 pm (UTC)Are you seeing You-Know-Who in Geneva? We're both useless, and I think we've managed about two emails between us since February. I really should email her.

Date: 2008-08-21 02:55 pm (UTC)I am indeed going to Geneva to visit You-Know-Who. I am promised cocktails in bars overlooking the old cathedral and much by way of touristy things to see and expensive shops to wander past.

Date: 2008-08-21 04:37 pm (UTC)I seem to remember that it was in the School of Pain that Katy learned the difference between rough and smooth handles.
Oh God, I'm done for.

The rules of the school are pretty hard, but the good scholars, who keep them best, find out after a while how right and kind they are. And the lessons aren't easy, either, but the more you study the more interesting they become."

Date: 2008-08-21 08:25 pm (UTC)That has to be the best thing I've heard for months. Please do write this fic, if ever you can!
*sends roses for the joke, and painkillers for the head*
Re: *enables*
Date: 2008-08-22 10:37 am (UTC)I fear, however, that this is a fic I should love to read rather than write. Although I might give in one day.
