As in Norway, if one lives in the American midwest it can be expected that one will encounter snow at least once during the winter, if not repeatedly (and constantly, this year....grr). But all the same, the first snow results in a mass of slideoffs and minor accidents as people remember again how to drive on snow. I don't know why it is, but it is.
Similar is the phenomenon that when a storm is predicted there is a run on milk, bread, and eggs. My husband and I have decided that there must be a secret tradition that neither of us know about that dictates that when there is snow falling one must make French toast. So the phrase "A French toast forecast" has entered our vocabulary.
We have a French toast forecast tonight. Fortunately I keep powdered milk in the house, and have most of a gallon of fresh, three dozen eggs, and if I want more bread, I'll make it.
