A year on from this post, and I still don’t have any brown boots.

So it is time to seize the day by the scruff of its neck, and buy some boots.

So do I buy the boots I liked last year and still like with the buttons*, or the boots in really lovely burnished tan with buckles?

[Poll #1477923]

I'll aim to keep them for at least five years. Hmm. Does that answer the question?

*Available locally for £150, not £185, or there would be no contest!

I love the buttons. The buckled ones are nice, but a bit more ordinary. The buttoned boots are just gorgeous, and if you've liked them for a year, chances are you'll like them for another five.

Definitely has to be the buttons. Those boots are magnificent. The others are merely good.

I really like the buttons...

However, I have the buckled boots in black, and they have been a good buy - I've had them for two winters now and they are holding up well (I did have to have the sole of one reglued last year, and obviously I've had them soled and heeled).

I very much like the different sized buttons. On the other hand, I think that if you really wanted the button boots you would have found a way to acquire them by now, and for this reason I vote for the buckles.

I like the magnificent vs. good thinking.

I do like Gabor shoes/boots - reliable and comfortable, as well as nice-looking.

Yes, I'm trying to work out if I didn't buy them because I was being too stingy and couldn't 'justify' them when I ought to have done, or whether thinking they were too expensive was a way of allowing myself not to buy them. If you see what I mean. (At this point my mother starts banging her head against the wall in despair.)

I must be the odd duck then, because I just don't like the ones with the buttons. (To be clear, it's something about the color and shape of the boots themselves, not the button detailing, that I dislike.) I like the others much better.

Then again, my brown-boot purchase this year was Blunnies*, so maybe I'm not the one to ask!

*Technically, not actual Blundstones but these (http://www.rossiboots.com.au/catalogue/catalogue_details.asp?prodID=70) similarly styled boots from Rossi, which are still made in Australia. Funny how no one there really wants to sell Blunnies any more now that the firm has moved their manufacturing to Thailand. /sarcasm, if it wasn't obvious

I know exactly what you mean. I find that if I don't buy something within a reasonable window of opportunity, I secretly don't want it that much - either I think it's too expensive, or it's not quite right and for that much money I want something that I'll fall in love with, or I actually want to fill that niche in my wardrobe with something slightly different.

Have you tried them both on? Which ones made you feel amazing? Or, alternatively, which ones would Harriet Vane wear?

The buttoned boots are wonderful, and I would go with them. The others would be fine if the buttoned boots weren't available, but the buttons are gorgeous.

I love the buttons, but it really comes down to what style of clothing you wear- IMO the buttons call for more feminine style than the buckles.

Honestly, I'm hopeless. They're both nice. They both fit. They're both affordable. But I can't decide!

My problem is that whilst I normally find this a very reliable indicator, there is also a smaller but significant subgroup of stuff I haven't done and later really regret. In this case, I honestly don't know/can't remember.

While I think the buckle boots are a prettier colour, I really think the buttons stand out as different & unique. There are a LOT of boots with decorative buckles. I've never known anyone with a pair with buttons anything like that. :)

I have tried both on - but not, and I think this may be crucial, both in the same shop at the same time. If one pair didn't fit, or I hadn't seen it, I'd have happily bought the other, but (un)fortunately, both do fit and look great!

I am not sure if either is quite sensible enough a pair of brogues for Harriet Vane.

I do think that the buckles are a more classic shape - the heel on the buttons is just a smidgen bigger than would be ideal, I think. But I find this minor defect is balanced by the buttons...

I like your choice of boots - I don't tend to go for clunky things, but I still admire them as objects, if you see what I mean.

In that case, I think you should definitely go for the buttons. There will always be other pairs of boots with buckles, but those buttons must be bought and appreciated now!

Try 'em on together and decide which I'd be disappointed to walk out of the shop without, I think.

I like the buttons on the one pair much better than buckles, but I much prefer the color on the buckled boots by a long shot.

This would be hard to decide!

I can't wait to hear which you choose.

I think the colour of the buckle ones is more practical, so if you're planning on keeping them a while, I'd be tempted to prefer them. Also, I like the darker brown better and it goes with more colours. Oh, and most importantly, I just love buckles.
