One for [personal profile] wellinghall, perhaps?

What might Lord Peter Wimsey hunt, shoot, or fish on foot, with only a couple of people, in Highland Scotland in 1927, at some point between November and March? Ideally in January/February. No financial, social, or technical limitations apply; canonically we know he fishes, shoots partridges, hunts foxes, and poaches rabbits.

Gosh, it's a bit cheeky to poach when you own half a county, even if it technically belongs to your brother.

Have a look at this:

Absolutely loads, though he's more likely to be shooting the game birds I think, rather than the female deer (don't think he'd think that was quite the thing, don't you know).

... as indeed largely today, the close season in Scotland for salmon and sea trout, and with exceptions for trout on rivers, ended in February, with regional variations. However, fishing in close season with rod and line was permitted on designated days.

Shooting pheasant, partridges, snipe, and cock was legal during January.

I don't see Peter taking advantage of the availability of stalking in those months for red deer hinds or for roe deer of any sort.

For shooting, pheasant or partridge sound about right for the time of year, maybe through late January. I think salmon fishing season varies by river, rather than fixed season dates for the whole of Scotland.

Oh, yes, you asked abt hunting.

The Kincardineshire is the most northerly pack in Britain. No matter how extensive yr definition of the Highlands, there simply are no hunts inwith the Highland Line.

It is pheasant shooting season round here at the moment but that is nowhere near Highland Scotland and I don't know how long it goes on for. But my impression of pheasant shooting is that it involves lines of guns and hordes of serfs like Eddie Grundy acting as beaters which might pose a problem for the "with only a couple of people" bit.

Grouse. Their season is from 12 October to 10 December inclusive.

Rough shooting. Effectively, going for a walk and shooting anything (legal!) that you see. Grouse, the odd pheasant, rabbit, brown hare, mountain hare, hooded crows, rooks, jackdaws, magpies, jays (um, don't know if they live in the highlands).

Salmon, um, don't know what the season is but I suspect it doesn't run through the winter.

Some sort of deer is always in season. I can check, if you want?
