I have just ordered a sofa to replace my tiny cheap Ikea sofa that is really more of a seat. Alas, it is not online so I can’t link to it, but it is pretty much the opposite of my existing one, a sort of Chesterfield with sprung seat (no cushions) and buttoned back, in a heathery greeny-purple wool tweed. I even checked it would fit through the door. It’s brilliant. Photos will follow in 6 weeks when it turns up.

Does this mean that I am officially a grown-up? And if so, does that mean I have to face up to the “where is life going, what do I need to get my act together over in 2012” review that I’ve been avoiding? But today I do not care, for I have a sofa!

I hope that means all that looking was worth it.

That sounds accomplishment enough for 2012 without worrying about the rest of it.

I bought my sofa 3 years ago and it did feel very grown up. I only bought two real pieces of furniture for the Shed - the sofa and a wardrobe. The rest was hand-me-downs and IKEA cheapies. I have never regretted a single penny that I spent on either. The sofa makes me happy every single day.

I have not, however, stopped watching silly TV or got a clue about Where My Life Is Going. So I think you're fine.

That sounds lovely :) There's a company up here that I know of which does similar things, if I didn't find their wool tweed so itchy against my bare skin, I'd be severely tempted myself!

Though lots things do make me itch, my parents had a wool sofa when I was younger and I never had a problem with it (and I don't seem to have bare skin against sofas much anyhow - I'm not a warm-blooded person).

That sounds very grown-up. One day I hope to be grown-up enough to buy furniture for the company I used to work for (I was in customer services, but found a lot of excuses to go and watch the sofas being made in the factory).

I may feel less grown up when I am sitting on it watching silly television!

I would like going to watch things being made in a factory, too.

Ooh. I've been meaning to replace my ancient Ikea sofa for ages, but don't quite feel grown up enough to spend serious money on furniture. Yours sounds lovely!

I always told myself that I was going to buy a "proper" sofa that I really liked for a lot of money, and not a medium one that I felt was OK for less but a good bit of money, so I have had some years to work myself up to it now that I finally have a floor to put it on.

Now I just need to replace my £8.99 Ikea "media bench".

If being an adult means having nice sofas, it sounds pretty good to me! Congratulations on the sofa.

Congratulations! It's exciting buying a piece of "real" furniture...

but you don't have to be a grown-up if you don't want.

Eek! A couch is such a "serious" piece of furniture, you know? But it sounds really nice.
