Sometimes decisions just get made for you. One of the holiday destinations I have been contemplating is Iceland, and specifically the Laugavegur trail from Landmannalaugar and ending up at a certain volcano.

A BBC4 programme on this very trail was therefore a must-see. Well, the landscape is indeed stunning. I have been to Iceland for a long weekend before and spent a day in Thorsmork, and it was fascinating to see how places I have seen and have photos of have changed. No more icebergs on the glacier lake. No more glacier lake. The mountain huts were rather flash. But the programme also reminded me that my weekend in Iceland had a rather unusual feature, namely sunshine. This is not normal Icelandic weather. The filmed walk involved rain. And mist. And fog. And howling winds. I considered the prospect of a challenging walk in the pouring rain and mist.

I think I might save the Icelandic trekking for another year. I don't intend to camp there, either.

You definitely deserve the expensive Indian restaurant on your honeymoon.

Iceland strikes me as the European equivalent of Japan: incredibly expensive, and impossible to do cheaply if you are to stand any chance of enjoying it.

We did two expensive nights at Hotel Borg (http://en.hotelborg.is/)because he was willing to indulge my desire for Art Deco, though 11 years ago I'm sure everything wasn't as brown as it looks now, and three cheaper ones in a B&B that looked as though it had been converted from someone's garage.
