One is wan

I have a stinking cold* and am looking what my father would describe as "pale and two". Which with my last post, requires a poll:

*Which at least has brought an end to the jaw/earache I was having last week that was beginning to make me have dark thoughts about wisdom teeth.

When I have jaw/earache it's normally because I have been grinding my teeth in my sleep.

That sounds very annoying. I don't think grinding my teeth is an issue for me, whereas I do get quite frequent ear/jaw/tooth pain associated with colds/sinuses. This was beginning to worry me because the usual patterns didn't seem to be there, but it turns out they were just biding their time (and I should have caught how tired I was as a sign of incoming infection, too).

At this time of year, though, it's hard to tell if tiredness is due to fighting off infection or just the mass of things to be done! I hope the cold is better soon.

I think you missed the option "pronounce won and wan with a v because my German accent is becoming more pronounced by the days" (aka the perils of working in an international team where English is the lingua franca, but most people are not native speakers...).

English is actually my second language though I was eight when we came to the US so for all intents and purposes it's the one I'm most comfortable with. But tbh there are definitely some very subtle v/w issues!

I nearly had that option, and then I thought "Nah, the ESL speakers on my flist are all (Swedish) miles better at English than I am at any other language, I won't stick in an option about a stereotypical error." Clearly I should embrace the fail option!

Sadly enough, fluency in another language and stereotypical pronounciation errors aren't mutually exclusive, she said with a regretful sigh. (I am rather jealous of all people who are so much better at picking up accents than I am!)

I grew up in New England. I say one and won the same. Wan is different. Wan rhymes with swan, one and won rhyme with fun.

I think there's a subtle difference between 'wan' and 'one', for me. There definitely is in my head ('one' is a slightly deeper vowel), but whether anyone else would notice, I'm not sure. They're very definitely not the same as 'won', though, so I ticked (wan, one) != won for the purposes of the poll.

I think I pronounce wan to rhyme with "on", but it's one of those words which I never actually use because I am very vague on the pronuciation. "One" and "won" are deinitely the same as each other.
